Root Canal Treatment FAQ

Our tooth consists of three layers. The outer white portion that is visible in your mouth is called enamel. Inner to enamel lays the dentin, and the innermost part is called pulp, which contains the nerve and blood supply of the tooth. A root canal treatment is a procedure of removing the pulp portion of a tooth when it becomes infected. This saves the hard part of the tooth, and it continues to be functional.

If you have been ignoring a dental cavity for long, the bacteria eat up through the enamel and dentin and reach the pulp. There they begin to multiply rapidly owing to the excellent blood supply, which provides them all the nutrition that they need. This damages and sensitizes the nerves of the pulp, causing immense pain in that tooth. Then you need to get the infected pulp removed, and the procedure is called a root canal treatment.

Typically, Root Canal Treatment is done in 3 stages. In the first, the infected portion of the tooth is removed with a dental drill and access is gained to the pulp. Then the infected pulp is removed from the tooth and its roots, and it is shaped and prepared to receive the filling material. In the third step, an inert filling material is filled in the root part, and the tooth is restored with a dental filling material of composite. This may require several appointments, depending on the severity of the infection. You will need anesthesia at the start of the treatment, and your dentist may also prescribe analgesics and antibiotics for rapid healing and prevention of the spread of infection.

The discomfort is minimum and subordinate when compared to an extraction procedure, and in fact, it is no more painful than getting a tooth filling. Against the misconception the treatment is completely painless, only negative being it is long appointment then performing a filling.

Alternatively, you can get the decayed tooth extracted, but if you ignore it for long, the infection may spread to the adjacent tissue and cause complications.

It is always better to maintain your natural teeth for as long as possible. When you get a tooth extracted, the adjacent teeth and gums will be affected while replacing the missing tooth. Not only will it cost you a substantial amount of money but also it will prolong the treatment. The most crucial factor to consider is the amount of discomfort since, after an extraction, your soft tissues will need time to heal and not to mention the amount of bleeding it causes.

Sometimes, despite the best efforts of your dentist, the root canal may fail and cause re-infection in the tooth. To prevent this, always follow the instructions of your dentist to the word.

The success rate of a root canal is very high, and with proper care, a root canal treated tooth may even last a lifetime.

It will depend on the severity of the infection and the tooth undergoing a root canal. Posterior teeth are more complex in their anatomy and thus require more time.

For a few days after a root canal, your tooth may be sensitive so, take your medications as prescribed. Never skip them. Don’t bite on your Root Canal Treatment treated tooth until you get the permanent restoration or a crown over it.
