Kids Dentistry FAQ

As soon as the first teeth erupt or by the age of 1 year; whichever is earlier.

Not really. But if theyare used for longer than required, they may become a habit and harm your child’s dentition. If they are not willing to part with their pacifiers by the age of 3, you should visit a dentist.

Any fluoride toothpaste will do. But the quantity should be monitored. For children below the age of 3, just a smear of toothpaste will do since such young children tend to swallow the toothpaste rather than rinse it out. For children of age 3-6 yrs, a pea-sized amount should be used, and they should be taught to spit it out and rinse their mouths. Children should not be exposed to excessive fluoride.

Yes. You will need to gently wipe the gums of the baby by the use of a clean cotton pad, or gauze piece dipped in drinking water.

Rinse their mouth with lukewarm saline water and apply a cold compress if the area is swollen. Take them to the dentist immediately.

Yes. Parents often ignore the health of their child’s baby teeth since they eventually shed and permanent teeth erupt in their place. However, rotten milk teeth will affect the erupting permanent ones and cause discoloration in them. Also, the early loss of milk teeth will cause crowding of permanent ones.

If your baby has the habit of sleeping with the feeding bottle in their mouth, the sugar in the milk will cause the front teeth to decay. So, first and foremost, avoid the habit of your baby sleeping with the bottle in their mouth. Secondly, always clean their teeth before they go off to sleep.
If they have already lost their front teeth, visit your dentist as early as possible.

When a child repeatedly performs the act of sucking thumb, mouth breathing, teeth grinding, thrusting their tongue outwards, these are termed as oral habits.

These habits will not only make your child’s teeth crooked but also affect the growth of their facial bone, thus causing a permanent distortion.

You can try to intervene by pulling out the thumb every time they put it in their mouth. But habits such as tongue thrust and mouth breathing will require special oral appliance which can only be prescribed and fabricated by your dentist. So make an appointment with him/her as soon as possible.

You can try to motivate your child by brushing the teeth of their dolls and teddies. You can show them the technique by demonstrating it on your teeth. Whenever you brush your teeth, hand them their toothbrushes and encourage them to copy you.

Your dentist will measure your child’s mouth and get a soft mouth guard fabricated by a dental lab. Whenever your child engages in a sports activity, encourage them to wear it. It will prevent any injury to your child’s teeth and soft tissues.
